Established in 1927, Oak Mountain State Park at 9,940 acres is the largest state park in Alabama. The park has a large and placid manmade lake, small mountains and large tracts of forest. Extensive facilities include a playground, picnic shelters, a golf course, a seasonal restaurant and cabin rentals. The park also offers horseback riding and a BMX area.

Central Alabama in which the park is located is typified by diverse deciduous forests, low mountain ridges and generally clean rivers. The US government purchased most of the land that makes up the park in the 1930s and gave it to the state of Alabama. Facilities were developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

The main park lake is a popular recreational choice in nice weather. There are boat rentals and a beach area for swimming. The road up to Peavine Falls is narrow and steep, but it provides some good views and is popular with bikers looking for a harder ride. A shorter but more difficult hiking trail is located at Peavine Falls as well. The falls are relatively small and of average volume. If you like animals or have young children, the petting zoo and farm area is a great place to visit and interact with various animals. Also interesting to see are the Treetop bird shelters and the wildlife rehabilitation center. A short trail connects the two areas or they can be driven to. Both areas have live birds, but the rehabilitation center has more displays and educational information.

With a mix of activities and facilities, Oak Mountain can offer something for all. As the weather is usually mild, the park is a good choice year round. The park’s website lists nature classes and related programs.
