The Texas Kings Hotel is a historic economy hotel located in downtown Saint Jo on the town square. The hotel is approximately 100 years old. It's in a traditional brick building and is situated in a retail area with large store fronts. The upstairs hotel has 4 rooms and also a common area with a bar and billiards table.
The hotel was restored in 1999 and has an Old West motif. You can find animal mounts and cattle skulls on the walls. There are old fashioned wood plank floors in the rooms with a few scatter rugs. The rooms have individual AC controls and ceiling fans as well. Parking is available on the square or out back. A staircase leads to the parking in back, but the steps are narrow so caution is in order.
The stay here coincided with a visit to the Blue Ostrich winery and the Ancient Ovens restaurant. This is a common 1-2-3 combination that can work for those who want to make a weekend day trip from Dallas and avoid a long drive back to Dallas on the same night. The hotel was not staffed in the afternoon but advance arrangements were made for the rooms. The country room was sizable and spacious, but a little on the stuffy side. Coming back later that night the room and hotel was quiet except for our party. If you plan to stay here on your own be aware that another group staying in the hotel at the same time might make the place noisy, especially in the common area with a bar and pool table.
Sleeping that night was challenging because of road noise from the square. A room facing the parking lot was expected to be quieter, but noise, especially road noise, moves through the walls at this hotel. As for the room, the bed was clean and comfortable. The toilet and shower worked OK, but the sink drained inadequately in the morning. Towels were too limited, and a desk chair would have been helpful. Since there were no staff on location, it was not feasible to get more towels or other supplies that night. A traditional hotel with some old fashioned charm has some appeal for a weekend stay, but if the room and room standards don't measure up to expectations then a stay has questionable merit. For a $140 fee, the hotel could have delivered a more enjoyable and more relaxing experience. The bar and billiards table would be a plus if you come with a group and want to continue the party later at night. However, with mediocre facilities and relatively high prices, future visits to Saint Jo won't include a stay at this hotel.
