Best time to visit
The SpringHill Suites Phoenix Downtown is a midlevel hotel built in 2000. It has 6 floors and 121 suites. The rooms are a combination room/suite in the sense that they are slightly larger than regular hotel rooms and have a small sitting area, microwave, mini fridge, and extra sink. It's a nonsmoking hotel and does not accept pets. Room rates in the offseason (late May through early August) are around $120. Rates in more popular times like winter and early spring can get up to $250. Parking is free.
Hotel amenities include an outdoor pool and whirlpool, though only the whirlpool is heated. There is also a small workout room and guest computers. A hot breakfast is offered, but it's a grade below in quality and selection from the breakfast at a Residence Inn. A hotel shuttle is available but generally only goes to the airport. There is a shopping center about two blocks from the hotel; it has a handful of restaurants, such as a Hooters, Corner Bakery Café and a Japanese and Greek restaurant. There also is a movie theater.
April is a good time of year to visit Phoenix if you are into Major League Baseball and seeing various teams during spring training, but it’s less ideal if you are seeking less costly and less crowded lodging. Just about everything in town was sold out on this particular weekend in April, so finding a room for $230 at the SpringHill Suites seemed like a coup.
The room had a connecting door, but thankfully the neighbor was quiet. Noises from the hallway and exterior noises were also subdued. There were a few problems with room though. For example, the TV remote did not work, and a lamp was out of service. The shower was too narrow, and the water in the shower did not drain well when just the bath tap was utilized. The curtains, when closed, blocked the AC unit, so they had to be pinned against the wall with pillows to enable a decent airflow. Also, there was no wall unit control to adjust the AC, so to adjust the temperature meant having to awkwardly squeeze between the bed and the wall to reach the controls. On a more favorable note, the bed was comfortable. The toilet and room sink both worked properly. Also, the room was clean. Service at night was polite and professional, but the clerk in the morning was inferior. When some of the room deficiencies were brought to her attention, she showed little interest, did not apologize, and did not take corrective action. Elevators were very slow in the morning. There was no convenient access to the back parking lot which entailed either reparking the car in the front of the hotel or walking all the way around the hotel building with luggage to get to the car in the back lot. Breakfast was packed in the morning, so rather than waiting in line it was simpler to skip it and save the time for sightseeing.
This was just a one night stay, so the hotel deficiencies were not excessively detrimental from a trip perspective, but the shortcomings did lessen the hotel's overall appeal. Also, relative to the high cost of the room, the value received was incommensurate. Accordingly, a return visit to this SpringHill Suites is unlikely.
