The Courtyard Boston-South Boston is a mid-range hotel located about 3 miles south of downtown Boston. The hotel was built in 2005 and has 6 floors, 161 rooms, and 3 suites. The standard rooms are 244 square feet and the suites are approximately 500 square feet. Rates for a standard room typically range from $180-260, and the suites are about $150 more. The suites include a separate bedroom and living room and have a pullout couch. All rooms have a fridge.
Hotel amenities include a small indoor pool and a workout room. There also is a bistro/restaurant with breakfast and dinner service. A couple of guest computers are available as well. The hotel is located next to a large shopping center and within 500 feet of Interstate 93. Restaurants within walking distance include an Oliver Garden, Applebee’s, and a more upscale place called 224 Boston Street, which serves general American cuisine. Courtesy shuttle service is provided to a nearby subway station and to the main airport for a nominal fee.
The stay here was disappointing, so if that is all you need to know then no need to read anymore. A reservation was made in advance with a request for a high floor and quiet room. The assigned room faced the highway, and the clerk indicated the hotel was sold out. The room had an odd lemon type smell, the sink did not drain adequately, and the curtains did not close all the way, so after heading back down to the front desk and requesting a change a new room suddenly became available. Amazing how that can happen. The second room had a slightly musty smell, but the curtains worked, and the sink drained. The problem with this room which did not become evident till later was that the AC only worked when it was set to about 62 degrees. So the room was either too cold when the AC was running or too stuffy without it. It was too late at that point to request another room, so just had to deal with it. Also, a request was made for additional towels, but they never arrived. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable, and the room was clean. Also, the bathroom equipment worked properly. Interior noise was not an issue, but you may hear traffic on the highway side of the hotel. Typically Courtyard hotels are reliable choices for decent facilities and helpful service, but that was not the case at the South Boston location. On future visits to the city, alternative lodging arrangements will be made.
