Farina's was a rollercoaster ride on dish quality.
Farina's Winery & Café is a lunch and dinner service Italian Restaurant in downtown Grapevine and opened in 2007. There is a second restaurant in Granbury, Texas. The Grapevine location is a grade above casual dining, but you would not feel out of place in jeans or a t-shirt. Appetizers include salads, soups, dips and garlic bread. Entrees range from sandwiches, pastas, seafood and steaks. There also are a variety of pizzas. Entree prices typically range from $15-20.
This retro style restaurant has rich hardwood floors, unfinished brick walls and large storefront windows. The main dining room is connected to an antique shop, which doubles as a second dining room on weekends. There also is a smaller private room which is typically used for larger groups, as well as a terrace dining section out back. Farina's has live music Thursday-Sunday nights. On a Saturday night there was a guitarist entertaining the main dining room with classic rock tunes, and a pianist in the antique section was pounding the ivories with a mix of genres. The antique section was distinctly quieter than the main dining room. The dinner reservation included a request a quieter location, so getting a table in the antique store was a plus, but it was located right next to the piano player, a minus. However, he played well, and after a while the music was not bothersome. He even took requests and played a fine rendition of Memory.
There is nothing like a bottle of red wine to start off an Italian meal, and the Leese - Fitch California Zinfandel was surprisingly good. Selecting it was more due to luck than from knowledge, and the server had only a smattering of wine insights. Appetizers included a potato soup with meatballs and an Italian salad. The soup delivered copious amounts of blandness, and the salad failed to dazzle the taste buds. However, the house bread was a crowd-pleaser with a light crunchy texture, a perfect amount of butter and just a touch of garlic. A basil pesto pasta with meat balls entrée was a good sized portion. It benefited from tasty pine nuts and tender meatballs but was under seasoned, so a salt shaker had to perform CPR. The lasagna was overcooked, and its flavor was MIA. Just as all seemed lost for dinner, the Margherita pizza with tomatoes, spinach and artichoke hearts rode to the rescue. Pizza fans won’t be disappointed with this thin crust flavorful gem. The tomatoes were especially savory and nicely enhanced the dish. A side order of mashed potatoes and asparagus also came through, with a slight edge to the sautéed asparagus which were deliciously buttery and very tender. A tiramisu/cheesecake was rich and filling but also partially frozen. Farina's was a rollercoaster ride on dish quality. There was a full house though, so clearly the restaurant has its fans. With the right selections, eating here can be enjoyable. However, given the meal's inconsistencies, you should temper your expectations accordingly. Reservations are a good idea for weekend dinners. Also, on a plus note, there was no pressure to leave after dinner.
