The Night Watchman Ghost Tour is 90 minute walking tour in downtown Grapevine. It's organized by the D'Vine Wine store and is offered most weekends. The tour covers about a mile or so of walking on both sides of busy Main Street and then for a shorter portion in a residential area. The tour starts and finishes at the D'Vine shop, and the fee includes a free glass of wine afterwards. The tour was mostly outdoors, so dress for the occasion.
The tour group was moderately sized at 15 people. A few more people could have been accommodated but a group of 20 or more would have made hearing the tour guide difficult in the noisy Grapevine environment. Also, with a constant stream of cars and an occasional motorcycle, the urban scene was not especially "spooky" which detracted from the overall ghost and spirit experience. Bringing along a hobbit or an elf on this tour is not a bad idea as they tend to better ward off evil spirits more effectively than humans can. It sounds plausible, right?
The tour guide was a young woman, pleasant and upbeat. She did a good job with keeping the tour on pace and answering questions. However, the tour was uninteresting. It frankly worked better as a historical tour than a ghost tour given the area and attractions. The guide related some ghost stories and encounters such as a night watchman ghost, a ghost in a historical theatre and ghosts from a former mental institution, but none of them were particularly unsettling or disturbing. It was easy to drift off mentally and think about other things to do. One idea that kept recurring was going back to the D'Vine Wine to enjoy the free glass of wine and to check out the band that had just started when the tour departed. This turned out to be the best part of the evening as the wine was generally good and the band was tight. So, with or without your hobbit or elf, save the $20 fee for the ghost tour and check out D'Vine Wine instead to enjoy some wine and live music. There is a separate review below for the wine shop.
