Live Music Bars
The Grotto Live is a small bar located on McKinney Square in downtown McKinney. It features live alternative and classic rock from a variety of local bands. The bar has an open walkway to the Sauce Italian restaurant next door and serves food from the same menu.
The bar opened in 2011. It previously was a retail store. The bar is on the smaller side and has a long and narrow shape. There are two floors with a small bar upstairs in the back and a single (not so private) unisex bathroom downstairs. The bands play in the front of the bar and this area can be loud at times. The Grotto has a darker interior, especially toward the back. Restaurant tables are packed together downstairs. Upstairs has some couches and more open space.
This is a mellow place to hang out on a weekend. It has a casual atmosphere and a relaxed nature. While there is limited space to move around, it’s usually not so crowded that it feels too congested. The music is generally good, but will vary depending on the band. The bar’s website includes a schedule of upcoming shows. As far as drinks, if you are looking for some creative cocktails, this is a good venue. The World Traveler, a tequila drink, and the Elder Flower, a martini, are two of the more popular options. There is a large wine list, and wine is served by the glass and bottle. Drink prices are slightly on the higher side, but service was quick, attentive and helpful. Driving to McKinney Square is definitely a haul from downtown Dallas, but there are enough restaurants and bars to provide plenty of incentive. If you enjoy live music and like to relax more than to dance, the Grotto is a nice after dinner complement to one of the many restaurants on the Square.
