Best time to visit
In December 1862 Union and Confederate forces in the US Civil War fought a regional battle at Prairie Gove in Northwestern Arkansas. Though technically a draw, Confederate forces withdrew after the fighting and thereafter lost any serious chance to regain Missouri for the Southern cause. The battlefield park today is generally well-preserved and provides a good historical perspective of the events.
The battle resulted from a Confederate attempt to attack a Union force that was separated from another Union group. Confederates moved into a position to attack, but Union forces became aware of the risk and took action to join up. A battle ensued when one of the Union groups opted to attack on its own. The Confederates held higher ground and generally prevailed in the fighting except when they launched counterattacks which were repulsed. Toward the end of the day, the other Union forces arrived after a demanding forced march and tipped the fighting in the Union’s favor.
The park has a small museum that is worth a quick visit to get oriented. There also are a number of restored historic buildings that have been brought to the park. The primary appeal though is the battlefield and it can be best appreciated via a walking tour. Following the walking tour around the historic Borden House and then down the main hill allows one to view both the Confederate and Union lines, providing a vivid sense of the fighting. Civil War fans should appreciate a visit to this battlefield. Others may enjoy the historic homes and a taking a pleasant walk around the park.
