Rise No. 1 is a casual table service French restaurant and wine bar. It opened in 2008 and specializes in soufflés and desserts. The restaurant is part of the slow food movement, which promotes local food, recycled materials, fairness and sustainability. Rise is popular and can get packed on weekends and some weeknights. Reservations are accepted for parties of five or more.

The restaurant was founded by Hedda Dowd and stems from her trips to France and her fondness of French cuisine, especially soufflés. Rise is relatively small but is cleverly designed and partitioned to give it a sense of more space. There are two small bars, a climate controlled terrace and a small couch and merchandise display area. Rise has a distinctive French style that evokes an old country store.

Rise shines for desserts. In particular the gateau de chocolat (chocolate cake) served warm with a side of ice cream was superb, no real chocolate lover could resist its charms. The grand marnier a custard dessert soufflé is popular as well but ranks a distant second. The apricot fruit tart, however was light and tasty. Chamomile tea with honey was a nice dessert complement. As for entrees, the sundried tomato soufflé was well seasoned and appetizing. The brie cheese and cauliflower soufflé was a special item but also was flavorful. Non-soufflé entrees include steak and sandwiches. The vegetarian marshmallow soup was creamy and tasty as well. Both the menu and the portions here are fairly small. Service was attentive and courteous. The entrees and hors d' oeuvres are enjoyable but desserts are the main event. To really enjoy this restaurant and experience its charms, visit on a slower night. An interesting trivia tidbit is that George and Laura Bush are big fans of Rise.
