Located in the Fort Worth Cultural District, the Modern Art Museum is a contemporary art museum close to both the Kimbell Art Museum and the Amon Carter Museum. By mutual agreement with the other museums to avoid competition, the Modern focuses on art from World War II to the present. The permanent collection contains 2,600 pieces, but only about 170 works are on display.

The Modern began in 1892 as a public library and art gallery. The museum moved several times over the years and its holdings grew in both number and style. By the 1960s, the Modern had become a modern art museum. A need for a larger facility led to the opening of the current building in 2002. It was designed by architect Tadao Ando.

The Modern is an interesting place to visit and admire. The building itself is a bold artistic expression. With a thoughtful blend of open space, water, glass and concrete, it gives the impression of floating on water. It also includes a number of obscure, partially hidden hallways and stairways that offer some mystery and charm. The permanent collection is replete with art from talented and notable artists, including Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still and Andy Warhol. There are outdoors sculptures by Richard Serra. Not to be missed are the rotating temporary exhibits. These last several months and offer a more in-depth perspective of a particular artist’s work. It’s also worth taking a guided tour of both the temporary and permanent exhibits to enjoy a richer experience. Even if you are not a huge fan of modern art, the Modern is worth a visit. The art is approachable and the museum helps to further convey its meaning with interpretive signs, tours, and lectures.
