Beale Street Peals Out Great Music and Food
If you like music, history, or good food, Beale Street in downtown Memphis TN is a great destination. Beale street is where the Blues was born, and American music can trace many roots to this area. Fortunately, Memphis has helped keep this musical tradition alive in the Beale Street District.
The Beale Street experience differs significantly between night and day. On weekends, you can easily find ten or more music venues at night. Street performing bands in W.C. Handy park and in between buildings on the street can be excellent and free of charge. The clubs charge reasonable covers, and the atmosphere is authentic. And the choice of music is varied: traditional blues, R&B, rock and roll, soul, pop-soul-jazz fusion, rockabilly, and occasionally, jazz and hip hop. Beale street at night can be a little rowdy but safe, similar to Bourbon street in New Orleans with thousands filling the streets, bars, and restaurants. The B.B. King’s Blues Club, Rum Boogie Cafe, the Jerry Lee Lewis Cafe & Honky Tonk, and Silky O’Sullivan’s are among the favorite music clubs.
During the day, stores and restaurants provide music memorabilia and great barbecue. The area is also home to several popular attractions such as the Orpheum Theater, the Gibson Guitar factory, the W. C. Handy House, the A. Schwab Dry Goods Store, and the Cotton Museum. Thousands may gather in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel in the morning and the evening to see the marching of the ducks between their nightly abode on the roof and the lobby fountain during the day. Some of the restaurants have blues or R&B bands performing during the day from lunch until evening.
