It's just a short walk from the parking lot to the view of the falls and on a well maintained sidewalk.

The centerpiece of this 65 acre park is the 442 foot Akaka Falls. It is accessed by paved trails with handrails. The park also includes the smaller cascading Kahuna Falls. If you enjoy waterfalls and have some free time, this park merits a brief visit.

Located about 25 minutes north of Hilo by car, Akaka Falls is situated in a lush setting with a variety of tropical vegetation. There is a short loop walk that leads from the parking lot and incorporates views of both Kahuna and Akaka Falls. The latter is more impressive both in regard to its height and since the water free falls from the top of the falls to the base.

This park is all about viewing the two falls, it does not include any other facilities or activities. Given its proximity to Hilo and because it can be seen quickly, it is generally worth a visit for most people. Those who enjoy waterfalls will definitely want to stop by. If your time is limited though, the hour and a half it takes to get to the park from Hilo, see the falls, and get back, would be better spent at Volcanoes National Park.
