Hampton Inn & Suites Los Angeles/Sherman Oaks is an economy hotel with 4 floors and 96 rooms and suites. The hotel was built in 2008 but seemed older. Rates for a standard room typically range from $120-200, depending on occupancy levels and time of year. Suites typically cost $30 more and include a small fridge, microwave oven, and may have a pullout couch as well. This is a nonsmoking property, and pets are not accepted. The hotel footprint is small. There is no landscaping to speak of, just a building and parking lot.

Hotel amenities and features are similar to most other hotels of this category type. There is an indoor pool and workout room and guest computer. The hotel serves a complimentary hot breakfast as well. As for the local neighborhood, it’s mostly blue collar and urban. The 405 Freeway is about 500 feet away; a sizable park/recreation area with golf courses and a Japanese Garden is just across the highway. There are a few restaurants within walking distance, including Denny’s, a fast food Mediterranean place and Chinese/Sushi restaurant. The hotel does not have a courtesy shuttle. While the neighborhood did not seem unsafe, a security guard was on duty at the hotel, and the elevator had a slot to insert your room key before you could go to a higher floor.

The front desk clerk was polite and welcoming at check-in and facilitated a request for a quieter room in the back of the hotel. If you are noise sensitive, facing the parking lot in back is a better option than facing Sepulveda Boulevard in the front. Aside from a slightly musty smell, the room was clean. It was about average in size. While the bed was comfortable and the bathroom in good order, the room became stuffy enough during the night that the AC had to be adjusted down to 68 degrees from 70 degrees. It was not a big deal overall but was slightly annoying. A maid could be heard walking back and forth in the room upstairs the next morning, so a top floor room is a good option here. Breakfast included standard items like eggs, sausage, gravy, toast, muffins, fruit and juice. The eggs and a muffin delievered nourishment, but neither was especially flavorful. For a quick bite, the food passed muster though. The hotel also passed muster. It’s a basic place, but there were no major issues to report. As such, the Hampton Inn can work when you are looking for a decent hotel in the area at a reasonable price.
