The Shore Hotel is a refined boutique hotel in the heart of Santa Monica on Ocean Avenue and with views of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel opened in 2011 and has 164 rooms and 20 suites. It’s a nonsmoking property, and pets are not accepted. Rates for a basic room with a garden view typically range from $320-460. Prices go up for rooms with a pool or ocean view. Suites can cost an additional $150. Parking is valet only and costs $35.

The primary hotel section forms a U shape around a courtyard area with an outdoor heated pool and whirlpool. There are additional rooms in the back around an interior garden. The Shore also has a workout room and guest computers. All the rooms have a mini fridge. A higher end restaurant called Blue Plate Taco serves lunch and dinner. The hotel also has a concierge and room service for limited hours. Breakfast is offered for an additional $15. The Shore has a prime location. It’s across the street from the Santa Monica Pier, an upscale open air mall is a block away, and the Third Street Promenade with many shops and restaurants is within a few blocks.

Shore was built with a number of environmentally advanced features such as incorporating recycled materials, more use of daylight and planting native vegetation. It is also cool looking with a swank feel, accentuated by open space, marble and glass. The front desk clerk was polite and welcoming with a glass of champagne. However, on some phone calls to the hotel to inquire about rates, an operator/clerk was curt and seemed impatient. As for the room, it had a view of the pool and a partial view of the ocean. While it was on the smaller side at around 300 square feet, the room was stylish, clean, and the AC worked well. The bed was very comfortable. Another positive, was that the windows blocked out almost all noise from the street. Other reviews of this hotel noted noise problems from other rooms, but it was not an issue on this stay. The various bathroom controls worked properly, but the shower could have benefited from a side nozzle rather than just one overhead. Also, the water had an odd “soft” quality and seemed to leave a type of residue. While the stay here was pleasant, it came with a significant bill in the morning. If you really covet location and are willing to pay up for a cool lodging experience, the Shore can deliver. Otherwise, you would do better to stay someplace less costly and just park at one of the nearby parking garages to enjoy Santa Monica’s charms.
