The main part of the park. It was less crowded in January so easier to get on the various rides.

Disney California Adventure is a 79 acre theme park at the Walt Disney Resort complex and is adjacent to Disneyland. The park opened in 2001 and is located on a former Disneyland parking lot. California Adventure is primarily a theme park with popular rides found at many other parks such as roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, an accelerated drop, and a whitewater rapids ride.

The first park planned for this location was a takeoff of the famous Disney EPCOT park in Orlando, Florida, but high costs and local opposition led it to be scrapped in favor of a park premised on the state of California. Several upgrades and expansions have taken place over the years and with the most recent attraction completed here in 2012.

California Adventure is smaller than Disneyland, has fewer rides, and is easier to negotiate. It can also be seen in half a day if you plan ahead and visit in the offseason when the park is less crowded, such as in January or October. What can also help is to use the Fastpass system whenever possible to cut down on wait times, and, if you don’t mind riding solo, most of the popular rides have an expedited line for single guests. The best rides were Radiator Springs Racers (fast cars zipping around a track), Tower of Terror (accelerated drop and lift ride with a Twilight Zone theme), California Screamin’ (traditional roller coaster) and Grizzly River Run (whitewater rapids, good place to get wet on a hot day). Other decent attractions included Soarin’ Over California (an IMAX film type experience combined with simulated flight) and maybe Midway Mania for young kids (shooting at various objects to score points on a ride with Toy Story theme). Other rides would rate a distant second place or can be skipped if time is limited. The World of Color show is an impressive nighttime show with light, water and music. It may not be on the schedule every night so check the park’s website before your visit. There are also shops and restaurants here, but they were skipped in favor of spending more time at Disneyland. Ths park will mainly appeal to those into thrill rides. It lacks the quality, diversity, richness and history of Disneyland, so if you only have time for one park that is the place to go.
