A couple of Boston terriers had the run of the place. This was their favorite chair, and that toy was never far away.

The Webb Gallery exhibits contemporary art and eclectic antiques in a historic 10,000 square foot building in downtown Waxahachie. Much of the art is from self-taught American artists. The gallery is owned and managed by Bruce & Julie Webb, who also lecture on art and curate exhibits. In addition to the art and antiques, the gallery has periodic special events such as film screenings and live music.

The Webb's art and antiques collection began modestly by purchasing pieces of interest on travels or at estate sales. The couple also met and developed relationships with a number of self taught artists. In 1987, they decided to open a gallery to exhibit the art and chose Waxahachie because it was within a short drive of Dallas and still had a small town feel. In 1994 they moved the gallery to its current location, a spacious red brick building constructed in 1902. The gallery reflects them; it personifies their tastes, interests and styles. Like the displays, Bruce and Julie Webb are low-key and thoughtful but also free spirited and individualistic.

The gallery is equal parts art show, antiques store and flea market. So if you gravitate toward the unusual or eclectic, you will likely find something of interest here. The collection and displays change over time, but carnival art especially carnival banners from the early to mid 1900s are a common theme. The art of Esther Pearl Watson is also a favorite. She often incorporates flying saucers in her art which reflects her father's attempts to sell a flying saucer to the US government. Other recent artists include Robb Kendrick, Bruce Lee and Dirk Fowler. There are typically 4 new shows per year, and openings often include live music and drinks. These are good times to check out the new art in a more lively setting. The gallery is close enough to Dallas to make it a convenient and is distinctive enough to make it interesting. Also, if you fancy Boston terriers, there were a couple of cute and playful ones on hand.
