Wingate by Wyndham St Augustine is a 4 story economy hotel. It has 69 rooms, of which 3 are suites. The hotel was built in 2007 and is a stone’s throw from Interstate 95. It’s a nonsmoking property and does not accept pets. Rooms include small refrigerators and microwave ovens.

The amenities are fairly standard for a hotel of this type with a pool and whirlpool combination as well as an exercise room. A complimentary breakfast is included and there were some hot items like eggs and sausage. It looked reasonably good but St. Augustine had too many interesting sites to squander the time eating. A Denny’s Restaurant was next to the hotel and there was a Ruby Tuesdays and Cracker Barrel within a mile. The immediate area was a blue collar neighborhood but seemed safe and the hotel had a security monitor for the parking lot. There were also signs around the hotel indicating that videotaping was in progress which was creepy.

Front desk service at night and in the morning was pleasant and professional. The room though had a few shortcomings. The bathroom was unusually small and the bathroom door almost touched the toilet, which can be pretty inconvenient if you are sharing the facilities. Also, the air conditioner controls were below average. The room was fairly stuffy and uncomfortable in the morning. Both the bathroom and the bedroom were generally clean except for some stains on a chair. Furniture and decorations were somewhat cheap looking. Some better room aspects included a fairly comfortable bed and low noise level. The highway noise was noticeable outdoors but requesting a room on the opposite side made it a non-issue in the room. Room rates range from $80-100, but can get as high as $200 during special events in the area. You tend to get what you pay for in life and the Wingate was not very expensive. It was not a disaster but neither was it a smash. A future stay is possible, but it would not be the first choice locally.
