Best time to visit
Central 214 is a high end bar and restaurant at the Hotel Palomar in Dallas. The hotel is adjacent to Interstate 75 and within walking distance to Southern Methodist University. While the Hotel Palomar was built in 1960, it has been extensively remodeled and Central 214 has a contemporary edge. The bar area is spacious, low key and has a comfortable environment.
The property has private condos, retail shops and a spa. The hotel exterior is drab with all the charm of a cinderblock wall but the interior has an elegant feel, with ample light, tasteful wood finishes and chic furniture. Bar stools here were uncomfortable but a private terrace had more relaxing furniture and a fireplace for added style points. The bar is non-smoking except for the terrace. It was half full on a Friday night after work but can get busier when private events are held. Happy hour is Monday-Friday from 5:00 to 7:00.
We started drinking at the bar and then shifted to a more spacious table. Three mixed drinks included: Honeysuckle gimlet (gin and cucumber), Cymbeline (rum and melon) and Barrel aged Manhattan (bourbon and vermouth). The Manhattan was the best but not cheap at $16 a pop. It was a man’s drink with smooth tasting high end Bourbon and vermouth. The Cymbeline was also appetizing with a tasty mix of fruit and rum flavors. The honeysuckle was too sweet but was somewhat refreshing with crushed ice on a hot day. All drinks were served in a martini style glass, not sure why. As for the food, both the cheese spread and French fries were enjoyable and worked well with the drinks. The local Texas cheese selections were fresh and the dish included some grapes and jam as well. Central 214 is a good venue for drinks with friends when relaxation and conversation are on the agenda. The drinks were decent but not exceptional. Prices were higher than average. When staying at the hotel or using the spa you can access the outdoor pool and it’s a great place to chill on a nice evening.
