Bern’s Steakhouse is a traditional, low-key, urbane, dinner-service only restaurant. Steaks are a mainstay, but the diverse menu also includes seafood, poultry and vegetarian dishes. There are seasonal and rotating items throughout the year. Bern’s has a huge footprint with 7 dining rooms, a bar/lounge area, 48 private dessert rooms and one of the largest wine cellars in the country. Given its popularity, plan to make reservations well in advance, especially for peak dinner times on Friday and Saturday.
Bern’s was started Bern Laxer in 1956. The restaurant grew over time, adding dining rooms, a wine cellar and private dessert rooms. A tour of the kitchen and wine cellar is available. The restaurant has a business casual dress code which is enforced so don’t wear jeans or sneakers. Parking was valet. Bern's also grows vegetables on its own farm.
A first course of spinach salad with pecans was a winner. It had delicious cheese balls that nicely complemented the salad. A creamed spinach dish was ordered unknowingly with prosciutto but the waiter caught it and provided one without pork. The creamed spinach was appetizing but a bit watery. Another winner, a mushroom risotto entrée was light and somewhat salty but tasty enough to practically lick the plate. The all-important filet mignon was cooked well but did not stand out either favorably or unfavorably as far as taste, rather it met expectations. Taking a kitchen and wine cellar tour and hanging out in a dessert booth were great follow-ups to dinner. A macadamia nut sundae dessert was scrumptious. While service in the main dining room was pleasant, the server in the dessert area pestered us to repeatedly to check on things, and privacy had to be requested just to get some peace. Given its reputation and distinctive offerings, eating here was an exciting proposition. The restaurant mostly delivered on that promise but not entirely. Nevertheless, Bern's is a solid choice for its food, ambiance and style.
