The only difference between me and a madman is that I'm not mad. - Dali The Salvador Dali Museum is fine arts museum that focuses on the works of Salvador Dali, a twentieth century Spanish artist best known for surrealist paintings in the 1930s, and for flamboyant, self-promotional activities during his life. The museum was started by and incorporates the collection of Reynolds & Eleanor Morse, who also were friends with the artist. There are 96 oil paintings, including 7 enormous paintings called masterworks. The collection also contains many other Dali drawings, photos and art objects.

Dali’s mother died when he was young and he had a troubled relationship with his father. The most important person in his life by far was his wife who doubled as his business manager. Her image, sometimes haunting, appears in a number of his paintings and after her death he was a broken man. Dali was enigmatic, gifted, curious, arrogant and controversial. What distinguishes him from many artists is that his relevance never ebbed during his life or after his death. He was willing to explore the mysteries and perversions of his own psyche as much as he delved into new technologies, art forms and basic elements. Introspection, inspiration and investigation were keys to his art and vision.

The facility incorporates themes from Dali's art and interests, such as a double helix shaped staircase, odd glass bubbles extending from concrete walls and warped non-functional benches. It’s a mix of the useful and useless. The art is excellent and offers a meaningful perspective on the artist's talent and styles. Both a docent tour and an audio self-guided tour are available and both are worthwhile. The docents cover fewer paintings but in more depth, while the audio tour facilitates more time to analyze paintings of interest. Photos are not permitted in the galleries, but this link has some images: http://.thedali.org/exhibits/current-highlights.php. Any art connoisseur or just the art curious will appreciate and value a visit here.
