Bread Winners Café is a restaurant and bakery with a range of dishes and slightly higher than average prices. It's popular, especially for weekend brunch when waits of an hour can occur. Lunch and dinner traffic tends to be sparser. The menu includes egg scrambles, waffles, burgers, salads and some Mexican dishes, such as tacos and enchiladas. There also are a variety of cookies and cakes.
There are 4 Bread Winners locations in the Dallas area. The original is in Uptown and is typically the busiest. The Plano location opened in 2007. There is limited elbow room at the Plano restaurant; tables are crammed together in the dining room. A covered and heated outdoor seating area has more space. There also are a couple of bars with seating. The design style is like an industrial chic, with an unfinished ceiling, brick partitions and metal accents. It’s different but tasteful. Background noise can get loud, especially near the kitchen.
The food quality was mixed. On the plus side, the chicken tortilla soup tasted homemade. It was rich and hearty and chock-full of tortilla and vegetables. The portion was small but taste made up for it. Also a bananas foster waffle worked well with a combination of sweet tastes and appetizing textures. The bananas, cream and syrup were like a bouquet for your taste buds. A veggie scramble was not as good. The eggs were limited and served lukewarm. The vegetables were cooked properly, but were not especially flavorful. A dose of tobacco sauce helped wake them up. A green chili jalapeno bacon burger placed a distant fourth. The bland meat was excessively dry, no moisture at all and the cheese was rigid, quite unappetizing. This burger was a real disappointment for an $11 price tag. Bread Winners is one of those restaurants that has potential to be great and the volume of traffic would suggest it is, but the overall meal quality did not live up to expectations. To avoid a wait for brunch, aim to get here before 10:00am or after 1:00pm.
