Best time to visit
Caddo Lake State park is a 478 acre state park in north Texas. It’s primarily a lake access park and borders Caddo Lake, a 25,000 acre natural lake. The park is popular for camping and various lake activities like boating and fishing. Spring and fall are good times of year to visit.
The park was created with several parcels of donated land in the 1930s. The Civilian Conservation Corps developed the park, and some buildings from that era still exist, such as rental cabins and a group pavilion. The park’s visitor center includes a small museum which provides a brief history of the Indians who lived in the area and also has a number of native plant and animal displays.
The lake and camping are the primary draws here. The park offers lake access, pontoon boat tours and boat rentals. The boat tour is narrated and lasts about 1.5 hours. There are other boat tour operators on Caddo Lake as well (see the review of Caddo Lake for more information). In addition to camping, the park provides furnished cabin rentals, which include linens and towels. The larger cabins have small kitchens and living areas. The cabins can sell out well in advance on holiday weekends. Hiking options are limited here as there are only 2.5 miles of trails. A decent short hike is the Caddo Forest Trail, which passes by the CCC pavilion. This trail is well maintained but is steep in sections, so it is not suitable for those with mobility issues or who want a more casual stroll. Overall, the park has some appeal as a place to relax and unwind for a few hours or a few days. However, there are limited activities so if you like to keep busy and prefer a range of recreational choices, you will want to look elsewhere for a vacation.
