The Hawaiian cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line is a 7 day roundtrip of three main islands departing from Honolulu, HI. The ship stops at Maui, the island of Hawaii (2 ports) and Kauai. This cruise moves at a fast pace and is best for people who want a pampered and structured but superficial experience of Hawaii.

The ship, Pride of America, can accommodate over 2,000 guests. It has 10 full restaurants and other amenities like a gym, sauna, pools and theatre. There is no casino as gambling is not permitted in Hawaii. Smoking is allowed in state rooms and some outside decks but not in interior public areas. Also, there is a strict policy against bringing alcohol on board and bags are checked at ports. Both the food and the service in the buffet were superior to that of the main dining room, which has a freestyle dining concept without assigned times or tables. The ship’s featured entertainers were varied and enjoyable; the Polynesian dancers were the best act. From a service perspective, the room attendant was attentive and pleasant and room service was speedy. However, some shore excursion staff were surprisingly uninformed about island attractions not included in ship tours.

The advantage and disadvantage of this cruise is a lot of travel in a short amount of time. One can get a taste of more places but there is little time to relax. On the island of Hawaii the ship visits two ports in two days and leaves port early so getting back on time can be tight. If your travel preference is to visit one or two attractions and then spend the rest of the day lounging around, the cruise is a good option. Otherwise, it’s better to fly to a couple of islands, rent a car and see more sites at a slower pace.
