The Big Island Spectacular is an approximately two hour helicopter tour of the island of Hawaii offered by Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. The tour covers about 2/3 of the island. It is a fast and simple, but somewhat pricey way to see most of the island.

Blue Hawaiian has been offering tours since the 1980’s. The Big Island tours use two helicopters, the A-Star and Eco-Star. Eco-Star helicopter tours are more expensive but the helicopters have more comfortable seating and greater visibility. Generally, you can reserve the type of helicopter you prefer. The comfort and visibility on the A-Star helicopter tour was fine. Blue Hawaiian tours fly out of Hilo (east side of the island) and Waikoloa (west side of the island).

The Big Island tour left Waikoloa on time, returned on time and the flight was smooth. Also, the pilot pointed out landmarks and answered questions. The highlights of the tour were Kilauea Crater and some modest but visible lava in Volcanoes National Park. The Mauna Kea Volcano and some of the ocean cliffs on the north coast were scenic as well but less notable.

While this tour is good, the Kauai helicopter tour is better primarily because the scenery there is more impressive. Also, the volcanic areas on the Big Island can be viewed on shorter less expensive tours. This tour is best for those who want to see a lot of the Big Island quickly. Note that a price discount may be offered if you book more than 5 days in advance. In addition, if you are over 250 lbs., you will likely have to pay a ticket premium. Blue Hawaiian typically films and records the flight and offers a DVD of it for purchase.
