The Booth Western Art Museum is a top tier art museum near Atlanta and features an extensive collection of traditional and modern Western (American) Art. Booth opened in 2003, was enlarged in 2009 and occupies 120,000 square feet of display space. It is the second largest art museum in Georgia.

The museum was established by civic-minded anonymous patrons who wished to share their art with the public. It was named for Sam Booth, a friend and mentor of these donors. The collection focuses on Western Art but also includes Civil War art as well as images and memorabilia of US Presidents. The Western Art includes original works by such greats as Frederic Remington, Albert Bierstadt, Charles M. Russell, and Andy Warhol. The Civil War Art features original paintings by Mort Künstler. The art here is diverse and often superlative. There are indoor and outdoor sculptures, paintings, movie posters, and modern figures. The West is a common theme, but the range of expression is anything but uniform and far from common.

Even if you are not really into art, the Booth Museum should be on your short list. The collection is imaginatively displayed and informatively described such that walking through the galleries will appeal to both a casual observer as well as an information junkie. The 15 minute orientation film explains the art from an artist’s perspective and is worth watching. It’s hard to recommend a gallery or display because so much of the collection is impressive. The best advice is follow your interests and plan to spend at least 3 hours to enjoy one of the great collections of Western Art.
