Mount Magazine State Park was established in 1996 to preserve Mount Magazine, which at 2,753 feet is the highest point in Arkansas. The park is primarily wilderness and is surrounded by the Ozark National Forest. Known for its rugged beauty, Mount Magazine State Park has a number of scenic overlooks and a large lodge which opened in 2006.

Mount Magazine is an isolated mountain plateau that once was part of the sea floor. There are sandstone rock cliffs near the summit. Due to its height, isolation and cooler temperatures, the mountain has a variety of plants and animals, including some usually found further north. Temperatures on the mountain can be 10-15 degrees cooler than surrounding areas. Starting in the late 1800s, the mountain became popular as a resort and a number of lodges and pavilions were built over time. A national forest lodge operated from the 1940s till 1971 when it burned.

Mount Magazine has numerous activities, such as hiking, biking, rock climbing and hang gliding. Key attractions include the visitor center, the lodge, and the views along the park road. With a couple of hours you can see the visitor center, lodge and walk the Signal Hill Trail to the summit. Stay longer if you want to take more hikes or eat at the lodge. Another short hike is the North Rim Trail, which has good views. The lodge and cabins fill up quickly, especially in the fall when the leaves change so make reservations early. The lodge also holds socials and learning activities. On clear days the views from Mount Magazine are impressive and the park is a good choice to enjoy mountain scenery.
