Mainau Island is located about 4 miles north of Konstanz in Southern Germany. Here fragrant flowers bloom and vegetation can grow year round due to the temperate climate. This island was once the residence of the Knights of the Teutonic Order but has been owned by the Swedish Count Lennart Bernadotte since 1932. It is open year round with longer hours from 7am to 8pm from March to October and can be reached by bus or tour boat.
If one comes by bus, one enters by crossing a small bridge that connects the island to the mainland. Although the residence is closed to the public, all the other facilities, gardens and walks are open. Mainau Island offers much: such as scheduled concerts, dance and opera performances and lectures as well as sunbathing in the pond area, children’s playground including a miniature railroad, a petting zoo, an arboretum including a palm house, gardens of all types and a delightful butterfly house.
The gardens are seasonal and include an extensive rose garden, a herb garden, a kitchen garden, some of the produce of which can be purchased, a peony garden, a seasonal garden, a butterfly and scent garden, a dahlia garden, a shrub garden, a roof garden providing a view over Lake Constance and a shore garden. In addition, to the walks (rhododendron, wild and shrub roses and hydrangea) and trails, there are fountains and a floral water cascade. In season, food is provided for every taste at restaurants, a bistro, beer gardens, a grill, a bakery and a café. In addition, there is wine tasting every first and third Friday. To fully enjoy this delightful and picturesque place, plan to come and spend the day.
