Best time to visit
The Hyatt Place Phoenix/Gilbert is a midrange hotel built in 2009. It has 6 floors, 127 rooms, and is located in a suburban area about 30 minutes by car from downtown Phoenix. The hotel is nonsmoking but does accept pets for an additional $75 fee. The rooms have a room/suite configuration in the sense that they are larger than most standard rooms but smaller than a full one bedroom suite. The rooms are around 400 square feet, and rates range from $90-180 depending on the time of year. Parking is free.
The hotel is in a light industrial/commercial area. A Hampton Inn is next door. There is not much of interest in the local neighborhood. A grocery store is about half a mile away and is visible from the hotel. The Hyatt offers a complimentary shuttle within a 5 mile radius. The Santan Village Mall is about a mile from the hotel, and there are a variety of restaurants at the mall including an Italian place, a steakhouse, a barbecue restaurant, and a number of fast food places. As for amenities, the Hyatt has an outdoor heated (small) pool, some guest computers, and a comfortable lobby area. Food is prepared to order and is available 24 hours in the lobby area, but is not delivered to one’s room. There also is a small bar next to the front desk. A hot breakfast is offered too.
The visit took place during “baseball season” which ramped up the cost and the noise. There were a number of loud families in the lobby at night which made checking in more difficult. The front desk clerk had to ask them to quiet down so she could communicate with people waiting to get a room. The next morning, lots of kids in baseball outfits were milling around. The baseball scene detracted a bit from the hotel experience, but the room was quiet in regard to both interior and exterior noises. The room also was clean and in good order. All the bathroom fixtures worked properly. Not sure if this is local to the hotel or not, but the water had an odd “soft” quality that made it feel like there was still soap residue on one’s hands. While the AC was a bit cold at night, an adjustment made it comfortable. Also, the bed was clean and comfortable. A request for extra soaps and towels was quickly accommodated. Front desk service both at night and in the morning was pleasant and professional. As for breakfast, the scrambled eggs and the French toast were appetizing, and there was plenty to go around. A donut and orange juice were also fine. Hot cinnamon bananas were also served but were skipped in the interest of time and a bulging waistline. Overall, staying here was enjoyable, and the hotel is recommended for both business and personal travel.
