Domenica is a table service Italian restaurant located in downtown New Orleans. It's on the ground floor of the Roosevelt Hotel, which is a historic property. The restaurant opened in 2009 and is part of the Besh restaurant chain, which has a total of 9 restaurants all but one of which are located in New Orleans. One of the other Bech restaurants in New Orleans is a more casual version of Domencia, called Pizza Domenica.

As for the menu, there are a mix of cured meats and cheese options. Domenica has some traditional appetizers like salads, soups and pastas but also serves more unusual meat and vegetable small and large plate combinations such as rabbit, chicken liver, sweet potatoes, blue crab and buckwheat noodles. There are a handful of traditional meat entrees such as pork, veal and fish. A range of pizzas are also available here. For Dessert there are gelato, chocolate pudding and banana cake options. By the way, Domenica means Sunday in Italian, and the theme of the restaurant is a weekend meal in the Italian countryside.

The dining room has a tasteful and stylish appearance. It's also spacious enough to provide plenty of elbow room. An elevated bar area on one side of the restaurant has both bar seating and nearby table seating as well. If words can paint a picture, consider that the walls and floors are dark brown, furniture is contemporary, halogen lights are suspended from the ceiling and large paintings and art on the walls are a mix of traditional and eclectic.

This visit took place during Mardi Gras, and Domenica was within walking distance of the downtown Hilton Garden Inn. It also was recommended by the hotel staff. There was a short wait for a table on a Saturday night, but that is to be expected at a more popular restaurant in a city known for its cuisine. It's not a bad idea to make a reservation if you are coming here on a Friday or Saturday night especially for a larger party.

The server was prompt and pleasant. She offered some dish recommendations and did not argue or have an attitude when an extra set of silverware was requested. Also, the food was served at a proper pace, not too fast and not too slow. A tortellini with sweet potatoes and hazelnut brown butter appetizer started the meal off on a good note. The portion was a little modest for a $10 price and the pasta was a bit rubbery, but the taste was distinctive and flavorful, especially the combination of the sweet potatoes and butter. A veggie pizza was ordered for the main course. In keeping with an atypical ingredients menu theme, the pizza had some uncommon toppings, such as carrots, a pepper or beet, and perhaps squash or yam. The combination of flavors was pleasing, and it was served at just the right temperature. As a primary menu item, you would expect the pizza here to be high quality and it was. There is always room for dessert when dining out, especially when in New Orleans. A banana cake and mousse dish again was a modest portion and slightly disappointing as the mousse on top was too sweet to be savory. The bottom cake portion was better though. On a future visit the spiced apple cake would be a tempting choice. Overall, this experience was favorable and good enough to merit a return. It's cool enough to make a good impression on a first date and also relaxing enough to hang with friends. A happy hour is offered from 2:00-5:00pm with half off pizza prices and discounted beer and wine. There is also a full bar.
