This tree made for a good picture at sunset. The oaks in this area tend to grow short and broad.

First review
Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is a 200 acre suburban park in Plano, Texas located north of Dallas. It is well developed with such amenities as concrete trails, an observation tower, picnic facilities and a playground. As there are limited alternatives for a park outing in west Plano, Arbor Hills is popular for those seeking recreation in a more natural setting.

The park is made up of three habitat areas: blackland prairie, riparian forest, and upland forest. Each area is characterized by slightly different plants and animals. The variation is influenced by the amount of water and land elevation. At an exhibit shelter near the parking lot a sign offers information about these three land types and a large map shows the relative boundaries and trails. There are a number of paved and dirt trail options. A good choice for most people is the paved Arbor Hills Loop Trail, which goes through the three different habitat types and is 1.3 miles long. This trail also passes the park’s observation tower (pictured at right) which offers good views of the park and nearby suburban areas.

Arbor Hills is surrounded by development and is usually congested with runners, bikers, dogs and kids. As a result, it’s hard to unwind here even when walking the less busy dirt trails. Nevertheless, there is a death of parks in north Dallas, and Arbor Hills is one of the few options if you don’t wish to walk along a street sidewalk. The park is a fair choice for recreation in a quasi-natural setting, but it is too busy to be relaxing or to see much nature. This link has a nature trail guide:

The creeks are fun to play in and look for interesting rocks.
